The woman who went missing in the Sierra Nevada mountains for nine days was able to survive with broken bones and a daypack. But, from what information is available, it seems what really helped save her life wasn’t a big bag of gear, but the ability to stay calm and not give up. After getting lost and breaking a leg, she crawled to a stream to get water, even though it took her two days to do so. Although planning and having the proper equipment certainly can make things safer and easier, this is an excellent reminder of the importance of attitude.
